Stars & Highlights of the Week

13th Jun 2025

A huge well done to our Stars of the Week—you’ve all shown wonderful effort, kindness, and determination. Keep up the fantastic work!

It’s been another action-packed week at St. Mary’s, filled with learning, sports, and special moments:

A big well done to some of our talented pupils who proudly brought in their medals and trophies to share with the school this week! a Primary 2 boy brought in his soccer trophy, a Primary 4 pupil showed us her fantastic gymnastics trophies, and one of our Primary 7 boys shared his recent hurling medal. It’s always lovely to see the children celebrating their successes outside of school and inspiring their peers—keep it up!

On Monday, our Primary 6 pupils attended a Taster Day at St. Patrick’s College, Dungiven, where they got a glimpse of life in post-primary and had a brilliant time exploring new experiences.

Tuesday brought the excitement of Sports Day at St. Colm’s, Drum—what a fantastic celebration of team spirit and fun! Thank you again to all who helped make it such a memorable day.

A special thank you as well to Creative Activity, who made a beautiful wooden car and caravan for our playground—the children are already loving it!

On Wednesday, Primary 1 and 2 enjoyed a lovely end to their Shared Education journey with friends from St. Canice’s and Drumrane. To mark their final meet-up, the children had a joyful teddy bears’ picnic in the park—full of fun, laughter, and cuddly companions.

We said a warm farewell (for now!) to our wonderful Mrs Mullan as she begins her maternity leave. Staff gathered for some tea, cake, and plenty of well wishes as we celebrated this special time. Mrs Mullan has been such a valued part of our team—her kindness and dedication will be missed by staff and pupils alike. We can’t wait to hear the happy news when baby arrives!

Thursday saw our Primary 7s attend their Transition Day to St. Patrick’s College, where they met new classmates and teachers in preparation for their next big step.

A huge well done to our girls’ camogie team who proudly received their medals this week after placing 2nd in the Lorna Moore Camogie Cup. The girls showed brilliant teamwork, determination and spirit throughout the tournament. What an achievement—congratulations to all involved!

Well done to our brilliant girls who took part in the All County Girls’ Football Finals at Owenbeg on Friday morning — we were cheering you on every step of the way!

Our boys proudly represented the school in the Francis Lagan - All County Boys’ Football Finals at Owenbeg. Thank you to everyone who came along to show their support — it meant so much to the team!

Last Saturday - Families First NI Awards

We were delighted to be Highly Commended in the Best Primary School category at the Families First NI Awards—a lovely recognition for our whole school community.

A huge congratulations to Noreen Murphy and Seamus McConway, who both received Lifetime Achievement Awards for their incredible dedication to the children of Gortnaghey. We’re so proud of them!

Thank you to everyone who voted and supported us—it means so much!

Well done to everyone for another amazing week.
